Allama Iqbal was not a mere poet, in fact he was a great Philosopher and Thinker, a geo-political analyst, and a visionary. To be more precise, he was mystic poet a saint who was assigned the task to alter the lives of Muslims through his poetry. As Allama Sahib himself said, I am two personalities in one; the outer is practical and business-like, the inner is dreamer, philosopher and mystic. Furthermore, in one of the articles about his basic life sketch, Mustansir Mir wrote, Iqbal is capable of writing biting satire. Two examples are: Give Me another Adversary, in which Satan argues that he deserves a better rival than Adam, and Scorpion Land, which criticizes slave mentality. Allama Iqbal: Before, exploring the mystic world of Iqbal, lets have a general view on his life. Allama Iqbal, great poet-philosopher and active political leader, was born at Sialkot, Punjab, in 1877. He descended from a family of Kashmiri Brahmins, who had embraced Islam about 300 years earlier. Iqbal received his early education in the traditional maktab. Later he joined the Sialkot Mission School, from where he passed his matriculation examination. In 1897, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Government College, Lahore. Two years later, he secured his Masters Degree and was appointed in the Oriental College, Lahore, as a lecturer of history, philosophy and English. He later proceeded to Europe for higher studies. Having obtained a degree at Cambridge, he secured his doctorate at Munich and finally qualified as a barrister. He returned to India in 1908. Besides teaching and practicing law, Iqbal continued to write poetry. He resigned from government service in 1911 and took up the task of propagating individual thinking among the Muslims through his poetry. By 1928, his reputation as a great Muslim philosopher was solidly established and he was invited to deliver lectures at Hyderabad, Aligarh and Madras. These series of lectures were later published as a book The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam. In 1930, Iqbal was invited to preside over the open session of the Muslim League at Allahabad. In his historic Allahabad Address, Iqbal visualized an independent and sovereign state for the Muslims of North-Western India. In 1932, Iqbal came to England as a Muslim delegate to the Third Round Table Conference. In later years, when the Quaid had left India and was residing in England, Allama Iqbal wrote to him conveying to him his personal views on political problems and state of affairs of the Indian Muslims, and also persuading him to come back. These letters are dated from June 1936 to November 1937. This series of correspondence is now a part of important historic documents concerning Pakistans struggle for freedom. On April 21, 1938, the great Muslim poet-philosopher and champion of the Muslim cause, passed away. He lies buried next to the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore. Literature review: Many people have conducted research on Iqbals life. This list of people does not consist of only Muslims; rather Non-Muslims are far ahead in this field. This metaphor brings to mind three roles of the poet, Those of guide (like the eye, the poet looks out, guiding the nation on its path), visionary (like a sheer, he has insight into the future and wishes to share this with others) and a well-wisher or comforter (he is full of sympathy for the other members of society and like the eye weeps for their suffering). The poet then serves as the collective conscience of the people. Allama Iqbal, no doubt, was a poet like Alia has described. He is the collective conscience of the people. Since we have forgotten him and his work, thus we have started losing the conscience and have lost the way. The reason behind forgetting Iqbal is beautifully described in a book How to read Iqbal by Shansur Rahman Farooqi. He writes in his book, But a reason for their declining popularity with the common reader could be that he is not all that excited with Iqbals role as Haki-ul-Ummat and Shair-e-Mashriq. I personally enjoyed reading Munawwar Mirzas work. Prof. Muhammad Munawwar Mirza was a prominent Iqbal scholar, historian, writer and intellectual from Pakistan. He wrote a number of books and journals on Allama Iqbals life and work. Iqbal, for him, was a passion not a profession. He is extremely well-qualified on writing about Iqbals work life. Dimensions of Iqbal is seventh, but third to appear in English, book devoted exclusively to Iqbalian Studies. Each article opens new vistas of thought and, in a sense; all these articles could be regarded as so many paths leading to the same summit of understanding. It is interesting to note that Munawwar Mirza has selected an article for the opening of this volume that recapitulates the process of growth of Iqbals minds and offers a brief overview of his litereary achievements. In this book, chapters like Iqbal on Self-Evasion, Iqbal on Metaphorical death and Iqbal and the test of Faith emphasize upon the subject of self realization, its stages and different obstacles that hamper the way to realize ones self, that is, the pre-ontological principle of all existence. In the twenty first century, Iqbalaian Studies has taken the advantage of technology. There are a number of websites, electronic juournal and articles on the life and work of Allama Iqbal. They not only provide poetry in different languages but explanation of verses is also there for the better understanding of the reader. The biggest blunder made by Europe was the separation of Church and State. This deprived their culture of moral soul and diverted it to the atheistic materialism. I had twenty-five years ago seen through the drawbacks of this civilization and therefore had made some prophecies. They had been delivered by my tongue although I did not quite understand. This happened in 1907- After six or seven years, my prophecies came true, word by word. The European war of 1914 was an outcome of the afore-said mistakes made by the European Nations in the separation of the Church and the State. There are many examples of Allama Iqbals prevision and many of them are mentioned in this book. As the famous Iranian poet Bahar said, Our time is Iqbals time. Similarly, Prof. Arnold famous teacher of Allama Iqbal said on an occasion, Iqbal is a man of his age. He is a man ahead of his age and he is a man at war with his age. Our enemies are well aware of Iqbals importance. Deliberate attempts are made for side lining him from our lives, as they cannot eliminate his work completely. In order, to know their actual objectives; one should be familiar with the hidden and inner personality of Allama Iqbal. Mystic and mysterious Iqbal is present among us in one way or another. Many people have thrown light upon his this dimension. In the coming passages, I will explain it with the help of some incidents narrated by notable figures. Iqbal had secret meetings with saints. The following incident was quoted by Khurshid Nadeem in his program Alf. The actual narrator of this incident is Allama Iqbals special servant Ali Bakhsh. One night Iqbal called me in his room. It was quite late; when I entered I saw that a very pious man with bright face was sitting on the sofa and Iqbal was on the floor pressing his legs. I had never seen that guest before in my life. Iqbal asked me to bring three glasses of sweet Lasi. I was astonished because it was impossible to find it at that time. But I left. When I went out of the house, I saw another pious man selling milk and yougurt. I went there and asked him for three glasses of sweet Lassi. He gave it to me in a bowl but when I tried to pay him, he plainly refused and said, It is ok between me and Iqbal. Later, I gave it to Iqbal and he filled first glass of Lassi and presented it to the pious guest. After the guest drank it Iqbal presented him another glass. But when he presented him third glass he refused to take it and said, You should drink too. Then Iqbal asked me to leave. After some time, he called me again and asked me to accompany the guest to the door. The piou s guest was ahead of me and as I reached the gate, I saw the pious guest disappeared on the road. When I looked out, neither there was any shop, nor the pious shop keeper. I was shocked. I asked Iqbal about the two pious persons but he refused to tell me. Nonetheless, I kept on asking him for next few days and at last he told me that the pious guest sitting in the room was Hazrat Khwaja Moin ud Din Chisti (R.A.) and the pious shop keeper was Hazrat Ali Hajveri (R.A.) known as Daata Ganj Bakhsh. But he forbid me about telling it to anyone else. Dr. Javed Iqbal verified that Ali Bakhsh also told him about it. Moreover, Prof. Munawwar Mirza also quoted it in his book. Allama Iqbal was sent to this world as a visionary and a seer. He was a threat to them who wanted to control people and make them their slaves. Iqbal had the ability to revive the lost soul. He shook the basis of Zionist system with his poetry. Free Masons and Zionists have one basic rule: Do not be afraid of huge armies and weapons, be afraid of philosophers and thinkers and especially those one who can instill a new spirit in the dead bodies and minds of people. Thus, Iqbal is a clear threat to the current agenda of Zionists and Masons. They are making us slaves by controlling our mind, food, education and ultimately our soul. The whole point behind removing Iqbals work from our lives is that then we will not be able to decipher the complicated dirty tricks of these people. Allama Iqbal is not only a threat to Zionists because of his work; he is a danger to them because his ideas are based on Pan-Islamism. He was a staunch supporter of Caliphate. He was called Hakeem-ul-Ummat because he had the answers to the issues pertaining to Muslims at that time and also at this time. In order to understand this, one should be aware of the three important phases/ stages of Muslim Civilization. Qurun-e-Ula: The first stage of Muslim civilization which started after the death of our dear Holy Prophet (May peace and blessings be upon Him.) During this age, Muslims were at peak. They were strong not only ideologically but also economically. In fact, all the major Muslim cities were centre of gravity. Muslims were spreading their ideology, religion and values to other cities and conquered a number of places. After Qurun-e-Ula: After many 100 years of Qurun-e-Ula, the second stage of Muslim civilization started. During this period, Muslims were not expanding their boundaries; rather they were defending their holy lands. Although they were under attack during this time, yet they were stable and strong due to the staunch believe in religion and adherence to the ideology. They faced the great massacre in Baghdad by Genghis Khan. Nonetheless, they bore it with patience and quickly gathered their strengths and fought gracefully with the Crusaders. Ottoman Empire also came to peak during this time. In short, Muslims faced trouble in the second stage; however, they were still at peak. Doomed Gloomed: The third stage of Muslim civilization was full of gloom. It started almost 250 years later especially with 1757 war of Plessey. East India Company invaded Bengal and the downfall of Muslims started. It became worse with the downfall of Ottoman Empire in 1921. Muslims were unable to stabilize themselves because they were in slumber; unaware of their ideology. It was this period during which Allama Iqbal was born. It was decided with his birth that the rise of Muslims will start. The economies of Cuba and Puerto Rico are very similar during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. As Spain colonized these two islands in the 16th century under the idea that gold was abundant. Thus in turn the islands became a safe port for Spain and her vessels. It also set out to be a huge migration from the Spain to the islands, because everyone was set to search for gold. . This turned out to be short lived as the mining of gold peaked in 1517 till 1819. By Spain using Cuba and Puerto Rico for mining gold they needed slave laborers as the local Indians. The Indians soon became unsatisfied with their new conditions of living, they became hostile and many not able to cope with being slaves committed suicide and genocide. By 1540 – 1550 silver was discovered in Mexico and Peru. As Spain found its’ new source of income in Mexico and Peru, it left Cuba and Puerto Rico to literally fend for themselves. By the 1590’s their economy began to prosper by cattle breedin g and farming as this lead to new jobs on the islands. This new slow and uneven growth led supplies to be more expensive. By the 17th century the cabildos began to govern migration, basically they stopped migration. The Spanish government implemented regulation and restrictions, which in demand increased prices and taxes. As a result, many began to use the black market in order to purchase contraband. At this time agriculture also developed and farming expanded with sugar, coffee and tobacco crops. These new crops also served to encourage new settlements. No longer a remote military outpost, food shortages and inflated prices worsened. Supplies did not increase and money was not sent from Spain. The cost of goods did not decline but contraband increased. In the 18th Century, the English occupy Cuba in 1762 for 10 months, as it helped Cuba to see that they could be with better leadership and if they get the attention they needed. This occupation lead to free trade with England and the American Colonies, in turn it abolished trade tax. Vendors from England arrived offering Cuba consumer goods and industrial items. The ports were open to maritime traffic, which increased markets and increased demands. The new markets also increased prices and stimulated sugar and tobacco production in the absence of Spain. Also in 1797 the English invaded Puerto Rico, which lead to the acquisition of Trinidad.

The fine line between wisdom and foolery has often been explored and blurred in dramatic comedies throughout the ages. Often, in Shakespeare’s plays especially, the fool figure turns out to be the wisest figure out of all of the other characters, and is used as a way to make a comment on the social context of the time.This theme is present in ‘The History Boys’, as Bennett mostly uses characters as a way of exploring the fine line. He also uses scenes and themes during the play to explore the fine line between wisdom and foolishness, but he tends to focus on using the characters to explore the line instead. The Headmaster is a character with whom, when first introduced to, the audience would appoint the title of ‘foolish’, as Bennett shows him to be a very foolish character.However, this would differ from Shak espeare’s fool; in his plays the fools were often the wisest of characters, but in this circumstance, with this character, the Headmaster acts foolish without becoming ‘the fool’ from Shakespeare, as the Headmaster doesn’t have the hidden wisdom and knowledge Shakespeare’s fools had. For instance, when discussing competing schools in the league tables with Mrs Lintott, he says ‘†¦Leighton Park. Or is than an open prison?No matter†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ This quote shows the reader what a foolish man Bennett has created; a headmaster not knowing the difference between a competing school in the league tables and a prison is absurd. However, it helps Bennett to show the fine line between wisdom and foolery, as some members of the audience may think that the Headmaster is wise in some of the decisions he makes, as he does know methods to get the students to achieve academic levels that allow entry into Oxbridge.Another moment where Bennett explores th e fine line is when he says, upon discussing Oxbridge with the supply teacher Irwin, ‘I thought of going to, but this was the fifties. A second character Bennett uses to explore the fine line between wisdom and foolishness is Hector, one of the boy’s teachers.One of the first impressions we get of Hector is that he is a character who Bennett presents to be very wise; he has taught the boys so well they can quote literature at any time of the day in the correct context ‘†¦Posner (Edgar) ‘Look up, My Lord. ’ Timms (Kent) ‘Vex not his ghost†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ This is quite a feat to achieve, and it also shows that he too knows and und erstands when and where to quote literature, again showing his wisdom.However, this is a point where Bennett does show how fine the line between wisdom and foolishness actually is, as some people may view this skill as useless, as it probably won’t be able to help them in their university or working life, unless they pursue a career where literature and the need to quote it is needed, so this act may be viewed as quite foolish; spending time teaching the boys something they probably won’t need in their future lives, despite the fact that they and Hector may be considered wise for having this skill.Bennett does show Hector to be a character who does act very foolish sometimes; ‘No Headmaster, (He covers his ears. )†¦Non. Absolument non. Non. Non. Non†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢. The stage directions used here make Hector act like a naughty child who is refusing to stop what they’re doing; a grown man, who is a teacher nonetheless, acting this way does appear to be a fool to people around him, even if they know he is only pretending. However, this is one of the moments where you can explicitly tell that Bennett is exploring the fine line etween wisdom and foolishness and is showing indeed how very fine it is; some people may see past Hector acting like a fool and see him to be very wise; he knows that if he carries on refusing to do what the Headmaster askes of him, the Headmaster may well just give up and drop the subject. This could be down to the fact that Hector doesn’t view the Headmaster as a wise man; more of a fool who you can walk over and expect to carry on doing things the way you want to, even if the Headmaster is against it. ‘A hand on a boy’s genitals at fifty miles an hour, and you call it nothing? This is a very important quote in showing how Bennett explores the fine line. Hector is a very wise man; he has a deep understanding and knowledge of literature, he has helped get the boys A-Levels up to the standa rds of Oxbridge and is, academically, quite smart. However, the quote shows that, in terms of his judgements, he is quite a fool; the acts he performed were frowned upon by society at the time, and show to many people that he has crossed the line between wisdom and foolishness with ease without really realising it. †¦transmission of knowledge†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ This also shows how his judgements are foolish, and how he can be seen to be a fool by many people; when he is confronted about his actions, he uses quotes from poetry to try to get out of the confrontation. By the end of the play, many people would probably see Hector as a very wise man, but a man who has the tendency to cross the fine line between wisdom and foolishness, whilst others would see him as only being a fool, despite his knowledge in literature.Overall, Hector is probably Bennett’s main way to explore the fine line between wisdom and foolishness, as Hector crosses the line countless times without realisin g it himself. Another way Bennett explores the fine line between wisdom and foolishness is by using scenes, such as the French Scene. This scene takes place towards the start of the play, and is where Hector and the boys practise speaking fluent French by acting out a scene of their choice in French. A third way the fine line between wisdom and foolishness is through themes; specifically the themes of sexuality and sex.For sexuality; ‘†¦Don’t touch him†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ This quote is quite important in showing the fine line between wisdom and foolishness, as it is said when Hector and Irwin are discussing Hector’s early retirement, teaching and Dakin. Bennett shows here that Hector’s foolish decisions have turned him into a wiser man, who is advising Irwin on how not to make the same foolish mistake he did. The foolishness here makes the scene quite tragic rather than comic. Reading Analysis Guide: Trail of Tears Part A The author, Dee Brown, gives a brief description about Andrew Jackson’s policy on Indian removal in order to gain popularity and power. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the cause and effects of â€Å"Indian Removal† during Jackson’s terms, ultimately creating the â€Å"Trail of Tears. † As early as the colonial period Indian removal was evident, Brown claims. Indians never really got along with white settlers, and even if they tried to resolve the conflicts, it would fail.Indian Removal calmed down over time but in 1828, Andrew Jackson ran for president and immediately knew he would have to wipe out the frontier states. He made a treaty in which the Indians had to remove themselves from the states and move west toward the Mississippi. On there â€Å"trip† to the Mississippi, Indians faced many hardships that included starvation, death, and disease. Part B I feel that all the information given wa s germane and strengthened the chapter as a whole.The strongest points are found when the author talks about the history of Indian Removal. He states that mistreatment of Indians was evident as early as the Colonial Period. I think starting from the historical view of Indian removal made the story flow well and did a good job at catching the reader’s attention. Brown also tells about how the Indians were in America first, and over the years they began ceding their land and adapting to the â€Å"white man’s way. † Part CThe Trial of Tears reminds me of the Taiwan and China during the domination of Chiang Kai-Sheik and Mao Zedong. Chiang Kai-Sheik was apart of the Kuomintang (KMT), while Mao was apart of the Communist Party of China. This can be compared to the Trail of Tears , because neither Chiang nor Mao would accept each other, which reflects the relationship of the Indians and the white settlers in the states. As a result , Chiang moved to Taiwann and declar ed independence from China causing the ROC, while Mao ruled just the mainland of China.Some of the same aspects occurred during this time period as in the Trail of Tears. Chiang are like the Indians, while Mao is like Andrew Jackson (along with the white settlers). Although Chiang and Mao had conflicts, no major violence occurred, however during the Indian Removal period you had the Black Hawk War and rebellions by the Indians. Also, Mao did not force Chiang to move, but Andrew did force the Indians.
